Overview

Jianwen Que, MD, PhD is a Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC). His research is focused on the role of stem/progenitor cells in homeostasis and disease pathogenesis in gastrointestinal organs including esophagus, stomach etc. He is the Faculty Director of the Genetically Modified Mouse Models Shared Resource (GMMSR) at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC) and Director of the Columbia Center for Human Development at Columbia University. Dr. Que is a member of several national organizations and societies, including the American Gastroenterological Association and The American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI), and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Respiratory Biology and Translational Medicine. He received his PhD from the National University of Singapore in the Department of Surgery and his MD from Peking University.

Research

The Que Laboratory focuses on the development, stem cell biology and disease of foregut-derived organs, including the esophagus, stomach, and lung. Dr. Que’s lab has developed a series of mouse models combined with iPSC modeling to investigate the generation and regeneration of epithelial cells in the esophagus and lung. His research also explores diseases affecting these organs, such as pulmonary fibrosis, COVID-19 sequelae, eosinophilic esophagitis, and Barrett’s esophagus. Dr. Que’s work extends to cancer research in the esophagus, stomach, and lung. His lab has demonstrated the role of neurons in the progression of small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) and identified the involvement of gastric stem cells in gastric cancer progression.

Research Interests:

Lung cancer initiation; Lung development and regeneration; Upper GI cancer initiation and progression; Esophageal stem cell in maintenance and disease; Gastric stem cells in tissue maintenance and disease.
